“Can I make sure Dr. Lou is there for my cleaning?” - Patient Inquiry

If you've ever been nervous about a dental appointment, you know how comforting it would be to have a furry friend by your side. At Toothlife Studio, we’ve taken that idea to heart—meet Lou, our adorable dental therapy dog! Lou is a toy poodle, perfectly sized for sitting on laps or snuggling up close, and he's hypoallergenic, making him the ideal companion for everyone, even those with allergies.

Lou’s Story

Lou joined our dental team with a special mission: to help patients feel calm and comfortable during their visits. Toy poodles are known for their intelligence and gentle nature, making them well-suited for therapy work. Lou’s hypoallergenic coat means he doesn’t shed much, which is perfect for patients who may have sensitivities to pet dander. Born in 2018 Lou was part of the construction plan for Toothlife Studio, he was the onsite Good Boy while the office was in construction while attending school to learn his skills with K9 Academy in Toronto. Since our grand opening in 2020 Lou has been helping patients feel more comfortable every Tuesday.

How Lou Helps Our Patients

  • Emotional Support: Lou offers emotional comfort by providing physical affection, such as sitting with or resting near patients. This helps distract them from the dental procedure, creating a more relaxed atmosphere.

  • Calming Dental Anxiety: Studies show that interacting with therapy animals can lower cortisol levels (stress hormones) and increase oxytocin (the "feel-good" hormone). Lou helps calm patients who experience dental anxiety, improving their overall experience.

  • Comfort for Kids: Lou is especially popular with our younger patients. His friendly demeanour helps kids feel more at ease, making dental checkups and treatments a breeze.

The Power of Therapy Dogs in Dentistry

Therapy dogs like Lou are scientifically proven to reduce stress. Studies show that spending time with therapy animals can lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and increase feelings of well-being. Lou makes sure that every patient feels relaxed and supported. Dental therapy dogs like Lou undergo specialized training to ensure they can handle the sights, sounds, and environment of a dental office. They learn to remain calm around dental equipment and are trained to interact safely with patients in need of comfort.

A New Kind of Dental Experience

At Toothlife, we believe that going to the dentist should be a positive experience, and with Lou as part of our team, we’ve made that vision a reality. Patients love the added comfort of having Lou nearby, and many say it’s changed the way they feel about dental appointments.

Next time you’re in for a visit, be sure to say hello to Lou—our tiny, hypoallergenic hero! He’s always ready to lend a paw and make your dental experience pawsitively amazing.
