"A filling not only restores the tooth’s structure but also prevents further decay by sealing off spaces where bacteria could enter."
What are fillings and why do I need them?
A filling is a common dental procedure designed to restore the integrity and function of a tooth that has been compromised by decay, wear, or minor fractures. When a tooth develops a cavity, it means that the hard enamel surface has been eroded by acids produced by bacteria. This erosion creates a hole, or cavity, that can continue to grow if not addressed, potentially leading to pain, infection, or even tooth loss.
During the filling procedure, the decayed portion of the tooth is carefully removed using specialized dental instruments, leaving behind a clean and healthy tooth. This step is crucial as it eliminates the bacteria and decay that could otherwise continue to damage the tooth.
Once the cavity is thoroughly cleaned, the dentist will choose an appropriate filling material based on the location of the tooth, your dental history, and your aesthetic preferences. A common filling material is a composite resin, which is tooth-coloured and blends seamlessly with your natural teeth.
As the tooth is being filled, each layer is being hardened, or "cured," using a special light. After the filling is placed, the dentist will shape and polish it to ensure it fits your bite perfectly and feels smooth. This process not only restores the tooth's natural shape but also helps prevent further decay by sealing off spaces where bacteria could enter. In addition to restoring the tooth’s structure, a filling can alleviate pain or sensitivity caused by the cavity and protect the tooth from further damage.
How do I know if I need a filling?
Cavities are diagnosed by a dentist only, like Dr. Michelle. Although your dental hygienist knows how to identify cavities, it is not within their scope of practice to diagnose. You may hear the term “suspicious area” from your dental hygienist, indicating there is an area of concern that the dentist will need to assess. Dr. Michelle will use tools such as X-rays, intraoral oral scanners and AI software to identify areas that may indicate a cavity is present.
Will the fillings hurt or be sensitive?
The short answer is no. The filling procedure will begin by numbing the affected area with a local anesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the process. However, it can sometimes happen that your tooth is sensitive after the filling is complete. This sensitivity usually only lasts a short time and will go away on its own. If sensitivity persists after a filling, contact the office to have it looked at.
Nitrous Oxide
At Toothlife, we offer nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," to help patients feel more relaxed during their procedures. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative that takes effect quickly, allowing you to feel calm without losing consciousness. It’s ideal for those who experience anxiety or nervousness about dental visits, helping you stay comfortable throughout treatment. The gas is administered through a small mask, and you’ll breathe normally while it gently eases your nerves. Additionally, it wears off quickly, so you can resume your day shortly after your appointment.
