What is Invisalign and how does it work?

Invisalign, also known as clear aligners, are a set of trays that a patient wears for a period of time that can move and straighten teeth.

Invisalign works by gradually shifting your teeth into the desired position using a series of custom-made, clear trays.

Each set of trays is worn for about one to two weeks before moving on to the next set in the series. These trays are designed to exert controlled force on specific teeth at different stages of the treatment, gently moving them according to the treatment plan.

Special attachments, or "buttons," are placed on the teeth to assist in their movement, enhancing the effectiveness of the aligners. Since they are made from a smooth, clear plastic, Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible when worn, making them a popular choice for those seeking a discreet orthodontic solution. The aligners are also removable, allowing you to eat, drink, brush, and floss without any restrictions.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment plans are tailored to each individual's unique needs and circumstances, ensuring that every plan is personalized. The duration of treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the patient's adherence to the prescribed regimen, meaning the timeline can sometimes adjust as treatment progresses. To avoid complications or delays, it is crucial to follow all instructions and recommendations provided by the dental team throughout the process.

Who is best suited for Invisalign?

A common misconception is that Invisalign is simply for minor cases. In the hands of an experienced and competent provider complex cases are an option for Invisalign or clear aligner therapy.

After a thorough assessment, the dental team can provide detailed information about the expected treatment duration, the complexity of your case, and whether Invisalign is the right option for you. Maintaining a healthy and stable oral environment is crucial when considering Invisalign, so it's important to be current with any necessary dental procedures, such as fillings and cleanings, before beginning treatment.

At your complimentary assessment appointment, a 3D intraoral scan and photos will be taken to capture the current position of your teeth. The scan is then sent to Invisalign, where a preliminary treatment plan is developed. Once this plan is received, Dr. Michelle will review and modify it to ensure it aligns with your desired outcomes and the ideal treatment outcome. After the plan is finalized, Invisalign will create your custom trays and send them to the office. You'll then schedule an appointment with your team for the placement of attachments. During this visit, will explain how to care for your trays and maintain optimal oral hygiene. You’ll need to return every few weeks for progress assessments and to receive your next set of trays.
