“A root canal saves more than just the tooth—it preserves your natural smile and protects the foundation of your oral health for years to come."

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a common dental procedure designed to treat and save a tooth that is infected or severely decayed. The center of the tooth contains a soft tissue called the pulp, which consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected it can cause significant pain, sensitivity, and swelling. If left untreated, the infection can spread, leading to abscesses, bone loss, and potentially the need for tooth extraction.

During a root canal procedure, the dentist or endodontist (root canal specialist) carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp from the tooth's inner chambers (canals), which extend down into the roots of the tooth. After the pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to eliminate bacteria. The canals are then filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent future infections.

In most cases, a crown is placed on the tooth to restore its strength and function, as a tooth that has undergone a root canal can become more fragile.

Root canals are a highly effective way to preserve a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted, allowing patients to maintain their natural smile and avoid the need for more complex restorative options like implants or bridges.

I’ve heard root canals hurt, is this true?

Many years ago, dentistry looked a lot different than it does now. The statement that root canals are painful came from a time when local anesthesia and techniques were not what they are now. Thanks to modern techniques and anesthesia, root canals are relatively comfortable, with many patients experiencing little to no pain during or after the procedure.

Nitrous Oxide

At Toothlife, we offer nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," to help patients feel more relaxed during their procedures. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative that takes effect quickly, allowing you to feel calm without losing consciousness. It’s ideal for those who experience anxiety or nervousness about dental visits, helping you stay comfortable throughout treatment. The gas is administered through a small mask, and you’ll breathe normally while it gently eases your nerves. Additionally, it wears off quickly, so you can resume your day shortly after your appointment.

Root canals at Toothlife

Hearing the words "root canal" can be intimidating; however, at Toothlife, we prioritize pain management to ensure you receive the care you need without discomfort. After a thorough diagnosis confirms that a root canal is necessary, the entire process is conducted in a comfortable environment.

We begin by administering adequate local anesthesia (freezing) to eliminate any discomfort. Next, we isolate the tooth being treated from the rest of your oral environment using a dental rubber dam, to prevent further contamination. Once this is accomplished, we remove the infected tissue and thoroughly disinfect the tooth and its roots. Afterward, we place a specific material in the roots and apply a restorative material on top of the roots to complete the treatment. A tooth that has undergone a root canal often requires a crown afterward to prevent cracking or fracturing in the future.
