“If you’re not whitening, you’re yellowing”

How does whitening work?

Tooth whitening, often referred to as "bleaching," is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to lighten teeth by breaking down stains and discoloration. Whitening products used in dental offices differ from those available to the general public. Dental offices typically employ a whitening gel containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide and may use light or heat to enhance the results. The concentration of these chemicals can vary based on the desired treatment time and method. During the whitening process, the active ingredients penetrate the enamel—the outermost layer of your teeth—and the dentin beneath. The ingredients then react with the molecules responsible for the stains, breaking them down into smaller, less pigmented molecules. This oxidation process effectively reduces the appearance of stains and makes the teeth appear whiter.

Will my teeth be sensitive?

In short- It can, but we have steps in place to prevent that.

Sensitivity occurs because the whitening process temporarily increases the porosity of the enamel. As the enamel becomes more permeable this allows external stimuli, such as hot or cold temperatures, to reach the underlying dentin and nerve endings, which may lead to discomfort.

However, there are many ways to prevent sensitivity from happening before you proceed with whitening treatments. For instance, using a desensitizing toothpaste for two weeks prior to whitening can help reduce sensitivity. Additionally, your dental hygienist will provide guidance on other methods to prevent sensitivity and ensure a more comfortable whitening experience. We’ve got you covered.

When can I get tooth whitening done?

While it may be appealing to seek instant whitening results, it's essential to prioritize your dental health before proceeding with the treatment. This includes scheduling a check-up with our dentist to ensure no cavities are present, having a scaling appointment with our hygienist, and completing any necessary dental work is important. By addressing these needs first, you can ensure that your whitening results are safe, effective, and long-lasting.
